5 Sailing Training Tips to Improve Boat Speed and Race Performance

Monday 9th March, 2026

Improving your sailing does not always mean making dramatic changes. Often, the biggest gains come from improving small details and making them consistent.

Whether you race at club level or compete at open meetings, structured training can help you build confidence, improve boat speed and make better decisions on the race course.

1. Focus on One or Two Skills at a Time

A common mistake is trying to improve everything in one session. A better approach is to focus on one or two specific areas, such as tacking, gybing, starts or upwind speed.

This makes the session more productive and gives you something clear to measure.

2. Review Your Boat Setup

Boat setup can make a major difference to how the boat feels and performs. Rig setup, control settings and sail shape all affect speed and handling.

A training session gives you time to test different settings and understand how they change the boat.

3. Practise Manoeuvres Properly

Tacking and gybing are easy to overlook, but smooth manoeuvres are essential for racing. Poor technique can cost distance, speed and confidence.

Practising manoeuvres in a focused environment helps make them more reliable under pressure.

4. Work on Race Starts

Starts are one of the most important parts of racing. A good start gives you clear air and options. A poor start can leave you fighting to recover.

Training sessions can include start practice, positioning, timing and acceleration.

5. Debrief After Sailing

The debrief is where much of the learning happens. Reviewing what worked, what changed and what needs more practice helps turn time on the water into real improvement.

Improve With Structured Coaching

Sailing training is most effective when it is planned, focused and reviewed properly. A coaching session can help you identify what to work on and how to improve it.
