Good race preparation starts before you launch. Whether you are heading to a club open meeting, class championship or national event, the way you prepare can have a major impact on your performance.
The aim is not to remove every unknown. Sailing will always involve changing conditions. The aim is to give yourself the best possible starting point.
Check Your Boat Setup
Before an event, make sure your boat is ready. Check the rig, controls, ropes, fittings, foils and sails. Small issues are much easier to fix before the event than between races.
It is also worth thinking about your control settings. Knowing your base settings for different conditions gives you a reliable starting point.
Understand the Venue
Every venue has different features. Wind shifts, tide, waves, shoreline effects and racecourse layout can all influence decision-making.
Before racing, think about what the venue is likely to reward. Is one side of the course often favoured? Is tide likely to be important? Will the breeze be stable or shifty?
Have a Clear Routine
A good routine helps you stay calm and organised. This might include arriving early, checking the boat, looking at the forecast, getting changed in good time and launching with enough time to settle before the start.
Use Briefings and Debriefs
A pre-race briefing helps set the focus for the day. A post-race debrief helps identify what went well and what needs to improve.
This is especially useful at bigger events, where small improvements across several races can make a big difference overall.
